Redesign of the $5 to be issued on 2008
The U.S. Federal Reserve and the Secret Service announced the redesign of the $5 bill, which will be followed by the redesign of the 100. The main purpose is to protect the U.S. currency. The $5 bill is commonly used in vending and self-service machines; this is the reason why manufacturers of that kind of machines or any other related product have to start adapting their equipment to the new design.

The U.S. treasury emphasizes that new educational material is available for the public and businesses in an effort to be prepared for the new bills with enhanced security features. This is a way for the public to take advantage of the security features and protect their had-earned money avoiding losses due to counterfeit bills.
The following are the latest enhanced designs:
- $20 redesigned in 2003
- $50 redesigned in 2004
- $10 redesigned in 2006
- $5 to be issued on early 2008
- $100 to be issued later in 2008
Lots of money, research and development may be employed toward developing new security features. However, the public should educate and protect themselves by simply learning the main characteristics of the security features. Color, position and shape are just some characteristics that should be considered when trying to spot a counterfeit. Otherwise, all the effort spent in improving.
