Counterfeit? I Just Brought It From The Bank!
 | Cashiers daily ordeal is not only assuring an accurate reconciliation of the register’s drawer, but also making sure that the money in that drawer is genuine. In 3 of 5 stores the employee is responsible for making sure that each and every single banknote received is genuine. Otherwise, the cashier would have to afford the loss. |
In most of the cases the criminal gets upset after the cashier finds out that the bill is counterfeit. As an instinct, the person who hands a counterfeit bill to the cashier will say, “Counterfeit? I just brought it from the bank!” Some cashiers are obligated to deciding the quality of the bill and the customer gets upset thinking that it is something personal, perceiving that the cashier is judging their appearance. As reported by Tracy Press, a lady felt humiliated when an employee hesitated about the authenticity of her bill. “I felt (like) I was a criminal. It’s a big store. They should have something to check if it’s a legal bill,” the lady said.
Cashiers should not take the banknote away from the eyes of the customer to analyze it. Otherwise, the customer could argue that his/ her bill has been exchanged. In that case, the buyer should be credited the full value of the banknote. Other common method used to avoid ambiguity is to write in a piece of paper the serial number of the banknote. A large variety of products developed to overcome this problem are available; for instance: manual, automatic and instant counterfeit detectors are the most cost-effective solutions. Experienced cashiers recognize suspicious behavior in the person that, intentionally, hands a counterfeit; however, criminals use different techniques to distract the attention of the cashier. The following are the most common techniques:
- The criminal comes into the store with 2 or more people to distract the teller.
- They buy a cheap item with a big denomination bill. The purpose is to obtain as much change(real money) as possible.
- The fake bill is too wrinkled
- They are in a hurry
If you do come across a counterfeit bill, find your local law enforcement because they need to know that counterfeit bills are circulating around.
