Did you know?

The one-dollar bill also informally known as a one, a buck, a single, or a smackaroo is approximately 45 % of U.S currency. Statistics indicates that the “average life” of a $1 bill in circulation is 22 months before it is replaced.

Martha Washington, George Washington’s wife, the first “First Lady” of the United Sates was the first woman to appear on the U.S. currency. After her death, in one of Martha Washington’s surviving letters she expressed that she did not enjoy the role of being the first of the First Ladies. She expressed that many other women would be really pleased in her place, but she preferred to be at home. In 1886, her portrait appeared in the $1 Silver certificate.

Some clear features distinguish a silver certificate from the regular dollars. On the first Silver Certificates the seal and serial numbers were red or brown. While World War II the government issued Silver Certificates with a brown seal for circulation in Hawaii and with a yellow seal for North Africa. The purpose of these colored seals were that if any of these countries fell into enemy hands, the bills from those countries would be easy to identify and avoid monetary losses.

George Washington, who was painted by Gilbert Stuart, appears in the front of the current dollar note while the Great Seal of the United States is shown on the back. In 1963 the one-dollar bill became a Federal Reserve Note, since then its design was been kept identical.
